Statement from the Canadian Medical Association on Dr. David Butler-Jones announcement to step down as Chief Public Health Officer Français
OTTAWA, June 28, 2013 /CNW/ - The Canadian Medical Association acknowledges with gratitude the tremendous contribution of Dr. David Butler-Jones as Canada's first Chief Public Health Officer. Under the leadership of Dr. Butler-Jones, the Public Health Agency of Canada has become an internationally recognized centre for population and public health and an invaluable resource to public health in Canada. Canada's success in responding to the H1N1 pandemic was due in large part to the emphasis he put on ensuring that we were prepared to respond to public health emergencies. As the face of public health in Canada, Dr. Butler-Jones has spoken first and foremost for the needs of Canadians. His annual reports to Parliament on the State of Public Health in Canada have shone a spotlight on important issues such as health inequality, priorities for a healthy future and the needs of older Canadians and our youth.
CMA has had the pleasure of working with Dr. Butler-Jones and his staff to advance public health in Canada. His leadership and thoughtful council at the helm will be missed.
