DRUMMONDVILLE, QC, June 5, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) is taking the opportunity of its 40th anniversary to thank Canadians for their loyalty and invite them on a journey towards a more sustainable future. Today, VIA Rail announces its national initiative 40 Sustainable Actions for Our 40th Anniversary. These 40 community actions were selected for the potential they offer in terms of longer term impact for the communities. VIA Rail employees and members of 40 communities from coast to coast will be involved in these actions, slated to take place over the coming year.
In 2015, GARAF/Opération PAJE1 organized a project to offer solutions to environmental priorities identified by the Drummondville, Quebec, community. Today, as part of this undertaking, ten VIA Rail employees are collaborating with students and staff at Marie-Rivier High School to build water storage ponds for the installation of a viable and sustainable urban ecosystem. This project ties in with an educational endeavour of the Des Chênes School Board that will see 90% of the work carried out by students aged 13 to 17.
These young people are particularly busy today installing nesting boxes for various bird species, bat houses, as well as planting trees and shrubs. Additionally, since the water storage pools are located near the railway tracks, they will provide an opportunity for VIA Rail employees, in conjunction with Operation Lifesaver, to educate young people on the dangers of walking on the tracks.
"In addition to boosting employee pride and engaging them in a collective project, these 40 sustainable actions marking our 40th anniversary will help develop special ties with the communities served by VIA Rail. Indeed, we serve more than passengers, we serve communities. Each of these 40 actions is evidence of our wish to give back to these communities, and each underscores VIA Rail's desire to ensure a sustainable future for our country. Today in Drummondville, we are honoured to be making our modest contribution to this promising GARAF/Opération PJAE project, an initiative whose environmental effects will benefit present and future generations alike", said Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, VIA Rail President and Chief Executive Officer.
