Wines, fresh fruit, and versatile European flavors for Canada's Labor Day weekend
TORONTO, Sept. 23, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Labor Day weekend, The Charming Taste of Europe brought together three distinctive European agricultural traditions for Canadian consumers, media, and trade professionals. The promotional campaign, co-funded by the European Union, highlights wines from Abruzzo in Italy, kiwis from Imathia in Northern Greece, and late harvest wines from Bordeaux in France, showcases the quality, regional identity, and versatility of products deeply connected to their territories of origin.
From the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea, Abruzzo offers a diverse portfolio of wines shaped by altitude, maritime influence, and rich biodiversity. Known for their complexity, structure, and strong sense of place, the region's wines offer natural versatility at the table. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, the region's flagship red, is well suited to roasted meats, rich dishes, and aged cheeses, while Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, Italy's first denomination dedicated exclusively to rosé wines, brings freshness and fruit character to arrosticini, cured meats, pizza, seafood soups, and roast chicken. For lighter dishes, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC and Pecorino pair with seafood, grilled fish, salads, vegetables, and fresh cheeses, making Abruzzo wines a versatile choice across a range of everyday and Labor Day dishes.
Along the Garonne River in southwestern France, Bordeaux's late harvest wines offer another expression of European terroir. Produced primarily from Sémillon, Sauvignon, and Muscadelle, these wines benefit from the development of Botrytis Cinerea, or noble rot, which concentrates aromas while preserving balance and vivacity. Their versatility makes them well suited to both the table and the aperitif: among the category's many pairing possibilities, Cadillac AOP complements poultry, salads, and cheeses, while Loupiac AOP pairs with spicy mango salads and Asian or cuisine. Sainte-Croix-du-Mont AOP works alongside foie gras, shellfish, duck breast, cheeses, and fruit tarts. Their aromatic character and natural sweetness also lend themselves to creative cocktail applications for Labor Day entertaining, with examples including the Autumn Highball, combining Premieres Côtes de Bordeaux AOP with ginger beer and fresh pear, and the Citrus Bloom, made with Côtes de Bordeaux Saint-Macaire fresh grapefruit juice, elderflower syrup, and soda.
In Imathia, a fertile region of Northern Greece with a long tradition of fruit cultivation, kiwis offered a versatile ingredient for the Labor Day table. Supported by the Association of Imathia's Agricultural Cooperatives (ASIAC), the region's kiwi sector has grown significantly, with Greece now among the leading kiwi producers and exporters worldwide. Recognized for their balance of sweetness and acidity, Imathia kiwis can be used across both sweet and savory applications, making them a natural addition to Labor Day gatherings. For a barbecue or casual long-weekend meal, Imathia kiwis can be used in a fresh kiwi salsa with lime and herbs, served alongside grilled chicken or fish, or combined with fresh greens and cheese for a vibrant summer salad. For a refreshing beverage, kiwi can also be blended with lime juice and sparkling water for a bright, fruit-forward drink.
Together, the three partners of The Charming Taste of Europe offer Canadian audiences three distinct expressions of European terroir, demonstrating how wines from Italy and France and fresh fruit from Greece can bring quality, versatility, and regional character to the Labor Day table.
