TCHC's newest Regent Park building wins International Architecture Award

Award celebrates design excellence in multi-family housing and the role of architecture in building connected, inclusive communities

TORONTO, Sept. 16, 2026 /CNW/ -- Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) is thrilled to announce that the latest building in Regent Park's ongoing revitalization, Building 4A at Parliament and Gerrard streets, has been selected as a winner of the 2026 International Architecture Award. Presented by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies, this prestigious award affirms public housing as a catalyst for city-building and social equity.

The award, in the multi-family housing category, places Regent Park Building 4A among significant new international building projects. Designed by architects--Alliance of Toronto and Cobe Architects of Copenhagen, it recognizes the project as an ambitious exercise in urban density that sets a new bar for the design of publicly funded housing, and the power of architecture to promote social inclusion and civic engagement.

TCHC broke ground on Building 4A in December 2025. The 26-storey mixed-use residential building is part of TCHC's commitment to replace all original rent-geared-to-income (RGI) housing in Regent Park, providing 136 replacement RGI homes and 135 net-new affordable homes.

The award-winning building is also designed to meet the city's Toronto Green Standard version 4, Tier 2, a high-performance standard targeting near net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The $219.2 million project is made possible thanks to capital investments from the Government of Canada's Affordable Housing Fund ($86 million), the City of Toronto ($50.7 million) and TCHC ($82.5 million).

Through the partnership with TCHC and developer Tridel, the revitalization of Regent Park continues to transform the community. Phases 4 and 5 represent the final stages of one of Canada's most ambitious urban renewal projects. In addition to building new homes for TCHC tenants, the revitalization also integrates public spaces and sustainable urban design with thoughtful streetscapes, community amenities and accessible infrastructure.
