Recognizing tomorrow's disruptors today: Winners of the 2017 "Canada's Top Employers for Young People" competition are announced

TORONTO, Jan. 10, 2017 /CNW/ - It's not difficult to spot the organizations that will lead their industries through periods of rapid technological innovation and changing business models. A good place to start is with the employers that go out of their way to make their workplaces attractive for younger employees to begin their careers. The best of these organizations were recognized this morning, as the winners of the 2017 Canada's Top Employers for Young People competition were announced.

"Making your organization a good place for young people to start their careers is about more than simply appearing trendy or hip," says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project at Mediacorp Canada Inc., which publishes the competition. "It shows all your employees and customers that you are open to change. Employers that understand the needs of their youngest workers have more success in adapting their business models to respond to changing technologies and consumer preferences."

Now in its 15th consecutive year, Canada's Top Employers for Young People is an editorial competition that recognizes the employers that offer the nation's best workplaces and programs for young people at the beginning of their careers. The winning employers lead the nation in attracting and retaining younger employees to their organizations.

"We read a lot about disruption and the need for organizations to adapt their business models to rapidly changing technology and consumer behavior," says Richard Yerema, Managing Editor at Mediacorp and Author of the student guide The Career Directory, Canada's longest-running career guide for students. "Younger employees understand this instinctively and look for employers that want to re-invent their products and services for today's market."

Winners of the competition are chosen by the editorial team at the Canada's Top 100 Employers project on the basis of the programs and initiatives they have to attract and retain younger workers. These include benefits such as tuition assistance and the availability of co-op or work-study programs. The editors also examine each employer's mentorship and training programs, including benefits such as bonuses paid when employees complete certain courses or professional designations. They review each employer's career management programs, looking for initiatives that can assist younger workers advance faster in the organization. Lastly, the editors consider the average age of employees at each employer to assess the composition and profile of their workforce.

The 2017 winners were announced this morning in a special magazine published nationally in The Globe and Mail – the full list is included below.  The editors' detailed reasons for selection, explaining why each employer was selected, were also released today on and the competition homepage.
