According to FoodHero data, each user in Quebec City and Montreal keeps up to $190 worth of food out of the trash each year.
MONTREAL, Nov. 4, 2026 /CNW/ -- FoodHero, a Canadian pioneer in sustainable food commerce, today released data on the food its users saved from waste between October 2025 and September 2026, placing Quebec City and Montreal first among Canada's major cities. In Quebec City, each active user of the app saved an average of more than 20 kg of food over the year, worth about $190. In Montreal, each user kept just over 19 kg of food from going to waste, worth about $180. On average, FoodHero users in Quebec save more food than anywhere else in the country, with the two top ranking major cities.
Nearly two months of household food waste, avoided
According to Love Food Hate Waste Canada, the average Canadian household throws away 140 kg of food per year, a loss of $1,300. That means the average FoodHero user saves enough food to significantly offset the average household's food waste, by nearly two months a year.
In both Quebec City and Montreal, a single FoodHero order gives a second life to more than 3 kg of food on average, according to the company's estimates. To put this in perspective, that's more than the average Canadian household throws away in a week (nearly 3 kg).
A habit that lasts
Once they try FoodHero, most customers come back, often within a month of their first order. This trend is consistent across the country, showing that rescuing food is becoming a lasting habit for households looking to reduce waste and save on groceries.
These results come as grocery budgets remain under pressure, with food prices at stores up 1.7% year over year in September, according to Statistics Canada.
"These numbers show that people don't have to choose between their budget and the environment. When surplus food is easy to find close to home, people make it a habit. With the holiday season approaching, it's a simple way to lower your grocery bill while reducing food waste. As FoodHero keeps growing, the goal is to help even more Canadians save both food and money," said Renaud LeBlanc, president of FoodHero.
