After the holiday spending, more Canadians are looking for good food for less!
MONTREAL, Oct. 7, 2026 /CNW/ -- Thanksgiving leaves more than leftovers in the fridge. Once the holiday is over, grocery stores have more surplus on their shelves, and Canadians are stocking up on discounted groceries. According to FoodHero data, the week after Thanksgiving was the company's busiest week of fall 2025, with the amount of surplus food bought on the app up more than 10% compared to the week before.
And the trend isn't unique to Thanksgiving. Outside the December holiday closures, only one other week in the past year saw a comparable increase: the week after Easter 2026. For consumers, the days following major holidays are an opportunity to save money while giving perfectly good food a second life. The FoodHero app makes it easy to find discounted surplus food at participating grocery stores nearby.
The Week After Thanksgiving, by the Numbers
Compared to the previous week, the platform recorded:
- near 10% more surplus food listed by partner grocery stores;
- more than 8% more unique customers;
- 9% more orders*;
- 14% more items sold, with each order including a few more items.
Put simply, the week after Thanksgiving is when surplus food and hungry shoppers meet: more food available on FoodHero, more people looking for it, and more items saved in every order.
"We all love our holidays, and grocers work hard to make sure their shelves are full for their customers. Once the celebrations are over, that naturally leaves some surplus, just as families are dealing with a tighter budget. FoodHero helps our partner grocers make the most of that food, and helps Canadians save. More and more of them are catching on, and turning the week after the holiday into a smart time to shop," said Renaud LeBlanc, President of FoodHero.
*Each order corresponds to one in-store pickup made through the FoodHero app.
A Movement Gaining Momentum in 2026
Since the beginning of the year, Canadians have bought nearly 2.8 million kilograms of surplus food through FoodHero, the equivalent of 3.1 million pumpkin pies. Named to The Globe and Mail's Canada's Top Growing Companies ranking for a second year in a row, FoodHero's growth reflects a real need on both sides: Canadians looking for good food for less, and grocers looking for a smart way to sell their surplus.
