PETERBOROUGH, ON, May 27 /CNW/ - The International Dragon Boat Festival 2010 for Breast Cancer Survivors is proud to have Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) on board as a sponsor of this unique event coming to Peterborough June 11-13, 2010. OLG is contributing $15,000 and will be the lead sponsor for the festival's parade and opening ceremony on June 11th.
The International Dragon Boat Festival 2010 for Breast Cancer Survivors will see more than 2,000 paddlers from 75 teams and some 300 supporters arriving in the city from across Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, England, Italy, and South Africa. The goal of the festival is to raise awareness of breast cancer worldwide and to encourage survivors to stay active and enjoy an energetic lifestyle and the support of those who've also experienced breast cancer.
"The International Dragon Boat Festival is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes area. We're proud to be a community sponsor of this high-calibre event," said Larry Flynn, OLG Senior Vice-President of Gaming. "Besides OLG's financial support, more than a dozen of our staff at OLG Slots at Kawartha Downs will be volunteering their time to help this great event."
The kickoff of the June 11-13 festival will be a colourful parade of athletes through downtown Peterborough, which will also feature a 60-metre (200-foot) long lucky Chinese dragon. The parade ends in Del Crary Park with the Opening Ceremony, which includes a traditional "dotting of the eye" ceremony to awaken the dragon, a Mayor's Barbecue for paddlers, and entertainment by Canadian singer-songwriter and international performer, Justin Hines.
Highlights of the International Dragon Boat Festival 2010 for Breast Cancer Survivors include the dragon boat races, a gala dinner, a variety of workshops for paddlers, along with information/awareness booths and a special memorial flower ceremony.
OLG and OLG Slots at Kawartha Downs are pleased to be playing such an important role in this very worthy community event. Since its opening in 1999, OLG Slots at Kawartha Downs has raised almost $6 million for community-based organizations.
