Northern Shield Focuses in on Noril'sk-type Ni-Cu-PGE Massive Sulphide Target at Idefix, Quebec
OTTAWA, Dec. 4, 2014 /CNW/ - Northern Shield Resources Inc. ("Northern Shield") [TSXV: NRN] is pleased to provide an update on its 100% owned Idefix property and other exploration activities.
Idefix Exploration Results
As announced on September 8th 2014, Northern Shield completed a short sampling program at Idefix which included the expansion of the Eastern Showing with results of up to 11.1 g/t Pt+Pd+Au (4.6 g/t Pt, 3.8 g/t Pd, 2.7g/t Au) and 0.92% Cu.
Further sampling was undertaken at the time for geochemical purposes. The results of these samples, combined with Northern Shield's current database and knowledge at Idefix, were instrumental in providing for a more refined interpretation of the mineralization at Idefix. In the past, exploration had focused on a reef-type PGE model, but this new information and interpretation suggests, with a high degree of confidence, that PGE-rich Ni-Cu massive sulphides (i.e. Noril'sk-type) is the primary target model.
Evidence for this includes the presence of Ni-Cu-PGE rich sulphide "globules" in 11 of the 14 drill-holes completed at Idefix in 2013. Globules are blebs of sulphide that have been transported away from a pool of massive sulphide over relatively short distances, when the sulphides and host rock were still molten. Some of the globules at Idefix, which are up to 3 centimetres in diameter, were analysed using a portable XRF unit. Concentrations range between 3-5% Ni, 2-3% Cu and detectable Pd (greater than 17 ppm Pd). The geochemical signature of the mineralization observed at La Colline suggests association with, and therefore proximity to, massive magmatic sulphide mineralization. La Colline is located at the southern end of a magnetic trend that is down-dip from the globules observed in drill core.
"We cannot underestimate the importance of these sulphide globules observed in drill core," explains Northern Shield President and CEO, Ian Bliss. "They categorically tell us that a molten pool of Ni-Cu-PGE rich massive sulphide existed at the time of the formation of the gabbroic sill at Idefix. The information we have to date suggests that that pool of massive sulphide could still be largely intact and likely located at depth, immediately north of, and contiguous with, the mineralization at La Colline."
Northern Shield is planning a ground or airborne EM survey over a linear magnetic trend north of La Colline and east of the 2013 drill holes where it believes the massive sulphides could be located. A step-by-step explanation of the interpretation will be available shortly on the Company's website.
Other acquisitions
Northern Shied is in the final stages of due diligence on several easily accessible Ni-Cu-(PGE) showings in Quebec it is considering acquiring. The conclusion of this process should be completed in the next few weeks.
The exploration programs were overseen by Christine Vaillancourt, a Qualified Person under National Instrument 43-101. Samples were prepared by ALS Global in Val D'Or, Quebec and then analyzed by ALS Global in Vancouver, BC, for Au, Pt and Pd by Fire Assay with ICP-AES finish and base metals by four acid digestion and ICP-AES.
Northern Shield Resources Inc. is a Canadian-based mineral exploration company built around its platinum group element (PGE) expertise which forms the basis of its exploration in eastern Canada.
