Government of Canada awards contract for preparatory studies for electronic systems for the new bridge for the St. Lawrence project Français
OTTAWA, Nov. 26, 2013 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada today awarded a contract to IBI Group to further the work on the Government of Canada's commitment to a new bridge for the St. Lawrence.
The contract, in the amount of $1,094,218 (taxes included), entails preparatory studies and writing of technical requirements to help identify options for the operation of intelligent transportation systems, lighting systems, and electronic tolling systems for the new bridge for the St. Lawrence.
The intelligent transportation systems will incorporate various information and communication technologies that will give road users an efficient, safe and sustainable transportation network. They will also help users travel quickly and safely by informing them of any delay or other situation that may impact their travel. These systems will additionally enable a continuous flow of goods.
The preparatory studies will include the following:
- assessment of relevant intelligent transportation system options, in particular traffic management systems, user information systems, safety systems and monitoring of traffic;
- assessment of technological compatibility and information sharing with systems used by other organizations, for electronic systems and tolling;
- recommended design criteria for these systems; and
- description of needs for electrical and lighting systems.
The work also includes:
- preparation of preliminary design drawings for intelligent transportation systems, tolling systems, and electrical and lighting systems;
- writing of technical specifications and performance criteria for intelligent transportation systems, electrical and lighting systems, and electronic tolling systems, to be incorporated in bid or proposal documentation for the next phases of the project; and
- preparation of cost estimates for installation, maintenance and long-term operation of intelligent transportation systems, electrical and lighting systems, and electronic tolling systems.
Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) managed the procurement process for this contract and ensured that it was carried out in a manner that was competitive and fair, resulting in the best value for Canadian taxpayers. A fairness monitor oversaw the procurement process and PWGSC's integrity measures were applied.
On October 5, 2011, the Government of Canada announced that it would build new infrastructure to replace the Champlain Bridge. This bridge is one of the busiest in Canada, with $20 billion worth of international trade crossing it every year. It is a crucial corridor for the regional economy and for Canada as a whole. The project also meets the objectives of Canada's gateway strategies.
