OTTAWA, April 5, 2018 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is firmly committed to addressing radicalization to violence and exploring all options that would ensure Canadians are kept safe, while protecting their rights. Today the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, invited Canadians to share their thoughts on countering radicalization to violence through an online consultation led by the Canada Centre for Community Engagement and Prevention of Violence (Canada Centre).
Radicalization to violence happens when a person or group takes on extremist beliefs that lead to them advocating violence and, possibly, taking part in terrorist activity. Activities that contribute to preventing individuals from radicalizing to violence can range from supporting alternative narratives and positive messaging campaigns, to personalized interventions aiming to help individuals disengage from violent ideologies.
Through the consultation, Canadians can provide advice on a number of priorities:
- How local communities and frontline actors can participate in addressing radicalization to violence and its harmful impacts;
- Where funding and other resources can be directed in order to get the best results; and
- The role that the Canada Centre can play in increasing public knowledge about countering radicalization to violence.
The input from Canadians will build on what the Canada Centre has heard from experts, partners, and stakeholders as it develops a national strategy on countering radicalization to violence.
Starting today, participants can share their ideas through the consultation portal, where submissions will be accepted until April 26, 2018.
