First customer installations mark the next phase of Xplore's $181 million fibre expansion across Newfoundland and Labrador
MARKHAM, ON, Sept. 15, 2026 /CNW/ -- Xplore has connected its first fibre internet customers in Newfoundland and Labrador, marking a major milestone in the company's largest broadband expansion project in the province to date.
Xplore technicians have started installing customers on the new fibre network, representing the first step in a transformative initiative that will bring high-speed fibre connectivity to 27,785 households and businesses across Newfoundland and Labrador. The project is supported by an investment of more than $180 million, including a combined investment of $92 million from Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, demonstrating a shared commitment to closing the digital divide and ensuring residents in rural and underserved communities have access to reliable, future-ready broadband services.

The multi-year fibre expansion will provide access to some of Canada's most advanced broadband infrastructure, supporting everything from remote work and online learning to streaming, e-commerce, and digital healthcare services.
In addition to expanding connectivity, the project is delivering economic benefits across the province through the creation of jobs during network construction and through ongoing employment opportunities for Xplore technicians and support.
This investment strengthens Xplore's growing national momentum in expanding connectivity to rural and small-town communities. It follows significant fibre and 5G advancements across Alberta, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.
As construction and customer activations continue, additional communities across the province will be connected throughout the rollout, bringing the benefits of fibre internet to thousands of families and businesses.
