TNW Wireless Welcomes Minister Bains' Instructions to CRTC to Reconsider Regulations Regarding Use of Wi-Fi for Mobile Phone Service
Change in rules would significantly lower mobile costs for Canadians
VANCOUVER, June 5, 2017 /CNW/ - Vancouver-based TNW Wireless Inc (''TNW Wireless'') announced today that it is very pleased with Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development ("ISED") Navdeep Bains' announcement that he will ask the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (the "CRTC") to revisit recent decision regarding the use of Wi-Fi for mobile telecommunications.
In the decision issued on March 1, 2017 (CRTC Decision 2017-56), the CRTC determined that mobile subscriber access through public Wi-Fi when outside the mobile carrier's spectrum footprint cannot be used as part of a mobile carrier's home network. The decision means that without TNW Wireless' iPCS technology, mobile carriers currently cannot use Wi-Fi to extend their home network reach and must rely on roaming agreements with the major mobile carriers which only provides "incidental roaming". With the review of this decision, Canadians could benefit from significantly lower mobile costs which are currently among the highest in the world.
TNW Wireless service utilizes its proprietary iPCS smartphone-over-IP technology through extended Home Public Mobile Network coverage using its Wi-Node technology. Wi-Node gateway technology permits subscribers to use TNW Wireless' 850 MHz licensed spectrum service coverage remotely through an Internet Wi-Fi connection in Canada and around the world.
"Many Canadians spend the majority of their day in a Wi-Fi zone. It seems only sensible that we use inexpensive Wi-Fi for mobile communications versus more costly mobile voice channels whenever possible." stated Lawry Trevor-Deutsch, President of TNW Wireless. "Voice-over-IP revolutionized and lowered costs for landlines and data-based voice wireless is the natural evolution. We therefore welcome the Minister's statement and look forward to being able to provide our subscribers with low cost mobile services."
