Quick facts
- Their Majesties' visit next week reflects more than a century of connection between the RCMP and the Monarchy, with many important milestones. Among them:
- The North-West's Mounted Police's participation in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (1897)
- The donning of the title "Royal" on the North-West Mounted Police by King Edward XII (1904)
- The gifting of RCMP horses to the Monarch - Queen Elizabeth II received eight horses during her reign
- When Their Majesties visited Ottawa in May 2022, they toured the Musical Ride's headquarters, inspected the horses and riders, and took in a special Musical Ride performance as part of celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee
- In September 2022, five members of the Musical Ride took part in the funeral procession for Queen Elizabeth II
- In March 2023, in recognition of the RCMP's 150th anniversary and the upcoming coronation of King Charles III, the RCMP presented His Majesty with a Musical Ride horse named Noble
- His Majesty personally requested a horse from the Musical Ride. Noble eventually became his new charger horse (ridden for Trooping the Colour parades)
- His Majesty graciously accepted the appointment of Commissioner-in-Chief of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on April 28, 2023
- The role of the Commissioner-in-Chief is similar to that of a Colonel-in-Chief in the Canadian Army. A Colonel-in-Chief:
- maintains the direct link between the regiment and the Royal Family
- has no operational role, but is advised about all important activities of the regiment and pays occasional visits to regimental units.
- Since 2012, before accepting this role, His Majesty had served as the RMCP's Honorary Commissioner
