EDMONTON, Sept. 1, 2017 /CNW/ - The healing power of music will once again draw Canadians together in an extraordinary event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017. From sunrise to past sunset, a series of free concerts will take place in Canadian cities from coast to coast.
Following the success of last year's inaugural event, the Mysterious Barricades Concert Society is pleased to be presenting some of this country's finest performers for the second year. Two new cities have been added this year – Calgary and Sudbury, Ont.
Approximately 200 performers are lending their talent to this cause. Concert times and venues are in the backgrounder attachment. People are encouraged to attend the live concerts in their cities. In addition, the back-to-back performances can be enjoyed by anyone, anywhere with an Internet connection. All concerts will be streamed throughout the day at mysteriousbarricades.org.
This volunteer-driven event is the brainchild of Elizabeth Turnbull, an Edmonton opera singer and faculty member at the University of Alberta, who lost her husband, Chris, to suicide in September 2015.
"I want people at risk of suicide to know how much their lives matter, and that we as a country and a community wish for the stigma of mental illness to become a thing of the past," Turnbull said. "More and more, people are coming forward with their personal struggles and this is exactly what needs to happen. People need to feel safe in talking about their mental health and encouraged to seek help.
"Our hope is that fewer people will suffer in silence, more resources will be dedicated to preventing suicide, and, ultimately, fewer people will die this way."
A very important component of the day will be to make people aware of supports in their communities to help them and their loved ones. Information about local crisis lines and distress centres will be handed out many of the concerts and posted online on the Mysterious Barricades site.
