NIAGARA FALLS, ON, May 31, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today addressed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) about aspects of transportation and infrastructure that are important across Canada and to the Canadian economy.
Minister Raitt emphasized the importance of modern, reliable infrastructure to maintain a safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible transportation system. Minister Raitt also discussed the measures that the Government of Canada has taken to address rail safety and the transportation of dangerous goods across the country. Also highlighted were the recent investments under the Grade Crossing Improvement Program to upgrade and improve crossings across Canada.
Minister Raitt also put the spotlight on the New Building Canada Plan, the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in our nation's history, which will see the Government of Canada invest $53 billion in infrastructure across the country over the next 10 years. The Government of Canada understands the positive impact that quality infrastructure has on economic growth, job creation and long term prosperity. That is why federal investment in infrastructure has increased dramatically since 2006, and is at an all-time high.
Following her remarks, Minister Raitt met with the FCM Rail Safety Working Group as well as with representatives from the organization's Board of Directors, including its President, Claude Dauphin.
"Transportation is an essential part of the Canadian economy and safety is paramount for all transportation modes. Our government continues to work closely with provinces, territories, municipalities and industry to maintain and improve the safety and security of Canada's transportation system."
"World-class infrastructure is the backbone of our country's economic productivity. That is why our government is committed to investing in Canada's infrastructure through the New Building Canada Plan to reduce commuting times for families, enhance economic competitiveness, encourage job creation and strengthen trade corridors."
