Federal approval of Northern Gateway is the right choice for the Canadian economy: Edmonton Chamber of Commerce
EDMONTON, June 17, 2014 /CNW/ - With today's decision by Federal Cabinet to approve the Northern Gateway Pipeline, we can expect to see more jobs, greater economic growth and stronger communities, says the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce.
"Access to markets is vital to Edmonton business and the economy. The approval of the Northern Gateway project is the correct step towards guaranteeing global market access for our hydrocarbon products," said James Cumming, President and CEO of the Edmonton Chamber.
"Northern Gateway is a vital piece of the overall strategic vision for a prosperous Canada. Moving commodities to tidewater, and then to the globe, ensures continuation of the tax base we need to sustain our way of life. Edmonton business recognizes the strategic value and impact of the project and continues to support improved access to markets in all its forms," said Cumming.
The approval of Northern Gateway provides near-term and long-term opportunities for Edmonton-based businesses. In Alberta, the $1.5 billion construction phase will likely create about 380 long-term jobs and nearly 1100 construction jobs.
"We expect the project will further boost local goods and services contracts within Alberta by over $200 million. These are significant numbers, and we expect that that level of economic activity will make a direct impact in the Edmonton economy," said Cumming.
The Edmonton Chamber supported Northern Gateway as an intervenor at the Review Panel, which led to the recommendation of 209 conditions. The Edmonton Chamber has every expectation that the conditions can be met. "Edmonton has a significant concentration of pipelines within the region and our experience is one of safety and success," said Cumming.
