MONTREAL, Sept. 23, 2026 /CNW/ -- Just as the planets orbit the Sun, our solar system continues its own journey through our galaxy. Explore the Milky Way, discover its history, its future, and the dynamic transformations constantly taking place within it in the new film presented by the Planétarium | Espace pour la vie, Encounters in the Milky Way, opening October 6 and narrated by Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal. The film is produced by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, with major support from and in partnership with NASA.
Synopsis
Discover the chance encounters that have shaped our place in the universe. Reaching billions of years into the past and peering millions of years into the future, Encounters in the Milky Way is a time-traveling journey about the cosmic movements that shape our galactic neighbourhood.
Witness spectacular moments in our solar system's past and future, including the paths of stars, comets, interstellar debris, and visually stunning gas and dust clouds--and, visualized for the first time, a dramatic, ongoing merger of our galaxy with a smaller satellite galaxy.
Developed by a team that includes astronomers, science visualization experts, and artists, Encounters in the Milky Way is made possible by data from one of the most transformative projects of the past century: the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, dubbed the "billion-star survey" for mapping the precise positions, distances, and motions of nearly 2 billion stars in our galaxy.
Contribution from an expert at the Planétarium de Montréal
As part of ongoing collaborations related to the publication of scientific articles, Jackie Faherty, a senior research scientist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and curator of the film project, called on Jonathan Gagné, a scientific advisor at the Planétarium, to visualize the distribution of young stars in a region near the Sun. The information compiled and provided by Jonathan--namely, the position and velocity of these stars--comes primarily from a database he developed himself as part of his own research, a reference source for which his expertise is sought on a regular basis.
Encounters in the Milky Way is the first production to shed light on the history of our galaxy's cosmic motion and its influence on our solar system.
