ENBRIDGE GAS ONTARIO STRENGTHENS FIRE AND CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY ACROSS ONTARIO WITH $600,000 INVESTMENT
100 fire departments to receive life-saving alarms, firefighter training grants and public education resources through Safe Community Project Zero and Safe Community Project Assist
CALEDON, ON, Nov. 6, 2026 /CNW/ -- A $600,000 investment from Enbridge Gas Ontario in Safe Community Project Zero and Safe Community Project Assist will help advance fire prevention, carbon monoxide safety, emergency preparedness and public education in communities across Ontario.
This investment was announced today at Caledon Fire Station 302 in Bolton with Michael Kerzner, Solicitor General of Ontario, and Sylvia Jones, MPP for Dufferin--Caledon, in attendance.
Through Safe Community Project Zero, 76 fire departments will receive approximately 15,000 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to distribute free of charge to residents. An additional 24 fire departments will each receive a $5,000 grant through Safe Community Project Assist for training materials and public education resources.
"Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Enbridge Gas, and that commitment extends to the communities we serve," said Jennifer Burnham, President, Enbridge Gas Ontario. "Through Safe Community Project Zero and Safe Community Project Assist, we are helping local fire departments provide residents with important safety equipment, education and resources while supporting the continued training and preparedness of firefighters across Ontario."
"Every alarm distributed, every training resource provided and every public education conversation has the potential to save a life," said Jamie Kovacs, Executive Director, Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. "The success of Safe Community Project Zero and Safe Community Project Assist demonstrates what can be achieved when organizations work together with a shared commitment to community safety. We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with Enbridge Gas Ontario, which helps equip fire departments with the tools, training and resources they need to protect residents and make Ontario communities safer and more resilient."
Safe Community Project Zero will invest $480,000 to provide combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for recipient fire departments to distribute at no cost to residents. Alarm allocations are based on the approximate population each fire department serves, helping communities provide this life-saving equipment where it is needed.
Safe Community Project Assist complements that focus on prevention with a $120,000 investment in firefighter training and public education. Each participating fire department will receive a $5,000 grant for training materials and, new this year, public education resources to expand community outreach and safety awareness.
Safe Community Project Zero is a longstanding public education initiative supported by Enbridge Gas Ontario in partnership with the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. Since its launch in 2009, the program has provided more than 130,000 alarms to fire departments across Ontario, backed by nearly $4 million in investment from Enbridge Gas Ontario.
Launched in 2012, Safe Community Project Assist has provided more than 400 grants to Ontario fire departments through nearly $2.1 million in funding from Enbridge Gas Ontario. The program helps fire departments access resources for firefighter training and, beginning this year, public education.
Together, Safe Community Project Zero and Safe Community Project Assist help fire departments advance prevention, preparedness, training and education to protect residents in communities across Ontario.
