EDMONTON, Jan. 25, 2013 /CNW/ - Red Bull Open Ice takes over the outdoor ice rinks. The global tournament brings ice hockey back to its original roots—onto outdoor rinks. A series of qualifying tournaments will take place in Finland, USA, and in Canada. The best team from each qualifier will advance in the final played in Tokoinranta in Helsinki on February 23, 2013 to battle it out for the ultimate bragging rights in the global final against 31 other international teams. The Canadian qualifier is set to take place at Killarney Community League Arena (8720 130A Ave) in Edmonton on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 9 a.m.
Red Bull Open Ice is a pond hockey tournament that brings together ice hockey virtuosos. In the pond hockey tournaments, the teams can have different backgrounds and skill levels, but what they all have in common is that they love pond hockey. So you can expect high-energy action, skillful plays, tactics, and lots of fun. A maximum of sixteen teams of six players will compete in two 15-minute halves, with five minutes rest. In the end, the best two teams will earn their spot in the finals in Finland.

Put together a team by assembling three ice hockey virtuosos, plus yourself and two substitute players. In total, sixteen teams can enter each qualifying tournament and play for a place in the final. The registration fee is $120 per team and includes jerseys and 2 guaranteed games. All participants must be at least 19 years of age and must have a valid passport.
