Carpenters' Union Call to Combat Tax Fraud: Stop illegal worksites and protect workers
The Carpenters' District Council of Ontario launch campaign to stop construction industry tax fraud and protect hardworking Ontarians – April 14 – 17, 2021
TORONTO, April 6, 2021 /CNW/ - Today, the Carpenters' District Council of Ontario launched their campaign to stop construction industry tax fraud and end illegal worksites. Tax fraud cheats hardworking craftspeople out of their rightful pay and benefits and forces all Ontarians to make up for lost tax revenue. This lost revenue costs Ontario taxpayers anywhere from $1.8 billion to $3.1 billion every year. We must work together to stop these injustices and start to hold black market construction companies accountable.

Our Ask of the Government of Ontario
- Ontario should follow the example of the Commonwealth of Virginia, who designated the Virginia Attorney General's first Worker Protection Unit to educate workers on their rights, and to investigate, stop and persecute companies that unlawfully engaged in worker exploitation.
Our Ask of The Government of Canada
- The Government of Canada collects taxes for both the provincial and federal government in Ontario through the Canada Revenue Agency.
- The Canada Revenue Agency needs to take a proactive approach by devoting a team to investigate the illegal tax fraud in the industry, coordinate with labour and employers, and support law enforcement officials to stop the exploitation of Canadian workers.

"It is time for our members, law enforcement, legislators, and taxpayers to say enough is enough. Together, we can protect our hardworking construction labour force, now and into the future."
