72-year old marathoner wins award for empowering and inspiring women
TORONTO, April 3, 2017 /CNW/ - Susan Sommers is pleased to announce her selection by the International Women's Association as an IWA Empowered Women Award Winner. The award honours women who are empowered and are empowering other women in the community by example as well as service. Ms. Sommers accepted the award at a Gala Event attended by 700 people on Sunday, April 2, 2017.
According to Ms. Sommers, "I have completed 30 races, including two full 7 ½ hour Marathons, since I was 59 – all walking. I passionately share my story, the lessons I learned, and the tools that I embrace today to live a healthier, more purposeful life with women at all ages and stages of life."
In her most recent book, Love Your Body…Embrace Your Life! (Hay House Publishing, 2016), Ms. Sommers provides essential tools for lifelong health and fitness while expanding on the themes of her first book, Power Source for Women: Proven Fitness Strategies, Tools, and Success Stories for Women 45+ (BPS Books, 2010). The new book was written in collaboration with the University of Toronto Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, The Art of Living Foundation, and Ladylean, and it features evidence-based research, new self-assessment tools, and simple Action Plans.
In January, 2017, Ms. Sommers launched her new business, Power Source for Women, and created a new website, powersourceforwomen.com, to inspire women worldwide to make a commitment to their bodies. Since 2013, she has co-led trips to India and Provence as a Tour Leader for Womens Travel Network. Through her books, website, training programs, and travels, Ms. Sommers motivates and supports women on their health and fitness journey.
