20th Montréal Architectural Heritage Campaign - Montrealers honoured for
their efforts to safeguard heritage
MONTREAL, Sept. 24 /CNW Telbec/ - The Mayor of Montréal, Gérald Tremblay, Helen Fotopulos, member of the Montréal Executive Committee responsible for culture, heritage, design and the status of women, and Robert Turgeon, Chairman of the board of the Fondation Héritage Montréal, today presented the Heritage Emeritus Awards to 30 owners who have taken exceptional measures to maintain, enhance or preserve their properties or businesses. Five prestigious Special Awards were also presented at a ceremony marking the launching of the 20th Montréal Architectural Heritage Campaign.
"The Montréal Architectural Heritage Campaign has been helping Montrealers for 20 years now to discover some of the best architectural treasures that are part of our built heritage. More than 600 heritage enthusiasts have been honoured over the years for their efforts to preserve and enhance their residential or commercial properties in the neighbourhoods. Their involvement in preserving our shared heritage plays an important role in improving the quality of life of Montrealers and in making sure that we can pass on heritage treasures to future generations," said the Mayor of Montréal, Gérald Tremblay.
"I would like to acknowledge the dedicated involvement of the boroughs and related municipalities of the Montréal urban agglomeration, as well as the partners who work hard to make the Architectural Heritage Campaign such a success. Their contributions to enhance the treasures found in the neighbourhoods bolster Montrealers' attachment to their built heritage," said Helen Fotopulos.
"Just as does the creativity of our artists, the heritage value of our neighbourhoods gives Montréal the personality and character that sets it apart form other cities. The efforts of owners who take great care in maintaining and renovating their heritage buildings show how committed some members of the community are toward the cultural metropolis that we are," said Robert Turgeon.

(Enclosed is a list of individuals and businesses who have received an award.) Five Special Awards were given to individuals or groups for their remarkable contribution to protect and promote heritage.
The first Special Award is given as part of the 20th anniversary of the Architectural Heritage Campaign. The SITQ Award of Excellence, to recognize efforts of a person or group to preserve or enhance the city's heritage was presented to Maurice Forget for his role in introducing several activities to enhance heritage in city neighbourhoods in the 1990s when he was the President of the Fondation Héritage Montréal.
The Artisan Award was presented to Antoine Pelletier, of Ébénisterie Pelletier & fils, which has been a leader in the field for four generations. The Heritage Enhancement Award went to Susan and Katherine Wener, Vision enVert and Pierre Farley, architect for safeguarding and restoring the Thompson and Sparrow houses. The Heritage Award of the Greater Montréal Real Estate Board was given to the Corporation Théâtre Denise-Pelletier and to the firm Saia Barbarese Topouzanov, architects, for restoring the Théâtre Denise-Pelletier. The Award for Architectural Integration was presented to Les Habitations Laurendeau and the firm Boutros + Pratte, architect, for Les Cours Valois.
"I would like to congratulate the 2010 winners, who have made us discover new architectural treasures, and I encourage them to continue their efforts to beautify our city through actions to enhance the built heritage," added Mayor Tremblay.
The 20th Montréal Architectural Heritage Campaign is brought to you by Montréal and the Fondation Héritage Montréal, with the support of the ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine, Laurentian Bank and several partners, including the SITQ (Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec) and the Greater Montréal Real Estate Board.
A host of free activities are scheduled as part of the Architectural Heritage Campaign, which is held from September 24 to October 10. They include photo exhibitions, films, guided tours and lectures. A complete list of activities is available at www.operationpatrimoine.com.
