These stores are part of the 35 Supercentre projects planned for the company's fiscal year ending January 31, 2014. The projects include building new stores and expanding, remodelling or relocating existing stores. Including investments in its distribution network and ecommerce, the projects represent an investment of more than $500 million in the Canadian economy. For the first time, both PEI Walmart locations will offer a full complement of fresh groceries.
"We're thrilled to bring our Supercentre format, offering a full complement of fresh groceries, to PEI for the first time as well as the other nine openings happening today and next week," said Gino DiGioacchino, executive vice president of ecommerce and chief of operations at Walmart Canada. "We want to help as many Canadian families as possible save money on their weekly groceries and their general merchandise need. We are looking forward to hearing from our customers."
Walmart supercentres offer a full line of groceries including bakery goods, deli, meat and dairy products as well as fresh produce. This is in addition to the existing departments including electronics, home décor and apparel, creating a one-stop shopping destination dedicated to everyday low prices. Supercentres may also be home to a pharmacy, vision centre, connection centre for wireless services, photo centre, portrait studio, Tire & Lube Express for automotive services, Good to Go! Lotto, McDonald's, and Western Union.
Customers will also appreciate the updated Supercentre design, which includes easy-to-navigate aisles with directional signage and a bright interior colour palette defining the store's merchandise areas.
Walmart Canada is committed to supporting families in need and has one of the strongest community involvement programs in Canada. In 2014, the 11 stores to open over the next two weeks donated and raised more than $350,000 for charities and organizations in need. To celebrate the grand openings, the stores will present donations to local organizations.
Grand opening festivities are planned for each official opening. Each store will host a Grand Opening Block Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Customers can enjoy face-painting, live music, refreshments and samples.
