The CDN-NDG Borough adopts its 2019 budget and 2019-2020-2021 Three-Year Capital Works Program

MONTRÉAL, Oct. 9, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Côte-des-Neiges‑Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough council is proud to present the 2019 budget, which reflects the priorities, values and aspirations of its administration. The total budget of $67 M was adopted by a majority.

Sound and effective management of public expenses will make it possible to increase the financial contribution to community groups. Note that Borough Mayor Sue Montgomery is doing her part to contribute to this effort by waiving her additional compensation of $26,994.

The restructuring of personnel under the previous administration's Plan quinquennal de main d'œuvre (five-year labour force plan) is now a thing of the past. "Today we're adding 15 new positions, which will reinforce our teams and allow us to provide more services and carry out more ambitious and mobilizing projects for our citizens. Our intention is to have everyone work together to implement projects that make our borough greener and healthier, by increasing the size of our parks, widening our sidewalks and adding more curb extensions," said Borough Mayor Sue Montgomery.

The addition of two new resources to the parks team – a horticulture inspector and a technical officer – will serve to significantly reduce pruning delays. "Again, this year the Borough is planting just over 700 trees. The high number of trees planted is not only essential to replace the ash trees felled as a result of the emerald ash borer infestation, but it's also meant to meet the objectives set out in the Plan d'action canopée 2012-2021 (canopy action plan 2012-2020)," added Mr. Christian Arseneault, councillor for the district of Loyola.

Moreover, the creation of three new sanitation positions will further strengthen the actions undertaken by borough teams to curb insalubrity in dwelling units. "Adding to the number of inspections is a core action on our part. All citizens are entitled to adequate housing that doesn't have an adverse effect on their health and safety. We intend to step up our efforts to crack down on owners who break the rules," said Ms. Magda Popeanu, councillor for the district of Côte-des-Neiges, and vice-president of the executive committee responsible for housing, real-estate planning and management, as well as Montréal's diversity.

Stable and recurring financing will allow the borough's four libraries to operate effectively and maintain opening hours.

Additional revenues will be generated through the adjustment of fees for residents-only street parking permits (SRRR), based on the type of vehicle used. Owners of high fuel-consumption vehicles will have to pay more for their parking permits. "The revenues thus generated will allow our administration to heighten citizen awareness of the importance of active transportation, which is a priority for our team. We want to help change the public's transportation habits. Better yet, to promote active transportation, we intend to develop innovative programs and to encourage citizens to become new bicycle users," said Peter McQueen, councillor for the district of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

Finally, the increase in the local property tax will be limited to 2% ($4,50 for homes with a municipal assessment value of $500,000), which remains lower than the rate of inflation.
