PEMBROKE, ON, Dec. 16, 2016 /CNW/ - New settlements for workers at two Renfrew County employers will mean a more secure future in 2017, says the United Steelworkers union (USW).
Employees at Pemco Inc. have negotiated an agreement that includes a new, union-trusteed multi-employer pension plan, improved wages, vacation and benefits. Workers at Pemco make steel components for the home construction industry. The agreement is in place until 2019.
At Samuel, Son and Co., workers have also negotiated a three-year agreement, which includes an improved registered pension plan, a new, short-term-disability plan, wage increases and benefits. The steel service facility is a distribution centre for the region.
"These agreements for our members contribute to making Renfrew County a good place to work and raise a family," said Marty Warren, USW Ontario Director. "With all the negative news about worker displacement in today's economy, it remains the union's top priority to negotiate good contracts with employers who respect their workers and their rights."
Steelworkers union members at both Pemco and Samuel, Son. and Co. are members of USW Local 6946, an amalgamated union local.
