The Government of Canada celebrates Latin American Heritage Month
OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 1, 2025 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, made the following statement:
"Today marks the start of Latin American Heritage Month—a moment to honour the rich history, celebrate both the past contributions and present achievements, and recognize the vibrant identity of Latin American communities in Canada
The Latin American population in Canada totals approximately half a million people. The population tripled between 1996 and 2021. Coming from 22 countries, these communities have enriched Canada's social fabric. In addition to Spanish and Portuguese, these communities also speak several Indigenous languages.
People of Latin American origin in this country have expertise in many fields, such as entrepreneurship, research, teaching, the arts and sciences, to name but a few. Their perseverance and diverse experiences have enriched our nation, reminding us that our diversity is a strength and our multiculturalism a great source of pride.Even today, we recognize that racialized people are more likely to experience discrimination in Canada. Our government is committed to ensuring that all communities can safely preserve and express their cultural identities. That is why we launched Changing Systems, Transforming Lives: Canada's Anti-Racism Strategy 2024–2028 last year to build a better, fairer and more equitable country for everyone. We launched the first-ever Canada's Action Plan on Combatting Hate to give communities the resources they need to identify and prevent hate and intolerance.
I wish everyone celebrating Latin American Heritage Month meaningful moments of connection with their loved ones. I also invite all Canadians to learn more about the many vibrant cultures of Latin American communities. It is through combining our experiences, skills and expertise that we can make our country stronger and more united, one encounter at a time.
Happy Latin American Heritage Month!"
