St. Mike's scientists take on healthcare's toughest challenges at Angels Den 2026
Meet the scientists competing at Canada's biggest medical research competition, hear the stories behind the science, and see how St. Michael's Hospital is leading a new era of medical innovation.
TORONTO, Nov. 4, 2026 /CNW/ -- What drives a scientist to challenge conventional thinking? What inspires them to pursue an idea that could save and change lives? And what does it take to turn that idea into a medical breakthrough?
On November 4, St. Michael's Hospital Foundation's Angels Den, presented by RBC Capital Markets, offers a rare opportunity to meet the people behind some of medicine's most promising innovations as they compete for $700,000 in critical funding prizes. This year's event has raised more than $1.7 million to support the St. Michael's Hospital Research Institute.
Six teams will take the stage at Koerner Hall to pitch their ideas to judges, jurors and a packed house of supporters. Behind every pitch is a bigger story: the patients who inspired them, the challenges that shaped their work, and the commitment to find a better way.
This year's panel of judges includes business journalist Amanda Lang, science communicator Dan Riskin and entrepreneur Bruce Croxon.
Angels Den 2026 Projects:
- Giving Ozempic a new mission: A study that tests whether drugs like Ozempic can reduce inflammation in the brain and help patients recover from concussions.
- Navigating ICU risk in real time: An AI tool that monitors critically ill patients and gives ICU teams a chance to intervene before a life-threatening crisis.
- Rethinking recovery for people experiencing homelessness: A study exploring whether a dedicated recovery space for people experiencing homelessness helps them heal faster and improves hospital efficiency.
- Saving muscle while nerves heal: An existing drug that could prevent muscle deterioration after a serious nerve injury, giving damaged nerves time to regrow.
- Using AI to reduce childbirth risks: An approach that predicts which pregnant patients are unlikely to go into labour naturally, helping doctors decide when to induce labour.
- Tailored kidney cancer treatment: A new way to test kidney cancer treatments on patients' tumour samples to help doctors identify which therapies are most likely to work.
Bold ideas need support to see the light of day. Over 12 years, Angels Den has awarded over $7.3 million in funding, supported 101 research projects, sparked 10 spin-off companies, attracted an additional $57+ million in external funding, supported 12 PhD students, and launched 40 new treatments, tests, and tools that are improving Canadian healthcare.
"Some of St. Mike's biggest breakthroughs got their start on the Angels Den stage. Today, they're advancing sepsis detection, bringing AI innovations closer to Canadians, and making world-first remote robotic brain surgery a reality," says Melissa Martin, Co-Chair of Angels Den and Chair of the St. Michael's Hospital Foundation Board. "Behind every breakthrough are people who refused to give up, and donors who gave them the chance to keep going. When we say 'who we are is why we can,' this is what we mean."
