Toronto Hydro-Electric System and Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy

    Who:   Toronto Hydro-Electric System ("Toronto Hydro") and Toronto Police
           Services' Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy ("TAVIS")

    What:  Toronto Hydro representatives, TAVIS officers, Toronto Community
           Housing and Community Members will be canvassing the neighbourhood
           to install energy efficient florescent light bulbs in residential
           porch lights.

    Why:   The community clean-up and Light the Night initiative focuses on
           Toronto neighbourhoods identified by TAVIS as experiencing
           challenges in relation to violence. Toronto Hydro is providing
           free energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to
           residents for their front and rear porches.

           Residents and businesses are encouraged to turn on their new
           porchlights at night to dissuade crime and help make their home
           and neighbourhood safer. A CFL turned on between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.
           will cost less than one penny in electricity. That's because CFLs
           use 75 per cent less energy than an incandescent bulb and the
           lowest Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity price period is from
           9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

    There are two events this week:

    In the Scarborough community:
    Friday, September 24 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
    City of Toronto Parkette (Beside Unit 78 and across from 65 Greenbrae)

    With business customers in the Keele and Eglinton community:
    Saturday, September 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
    Eglinton Hill - south west corner of Black Creek Drive and Trethewey
    Drive
