MONTREAL, Sept. 8, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Joining health and addictions organisations across the country, Portage is celebrating today Canada's second annual Recovery Day today. Twelve Canadian cities are marking the day with official rallies where a proclamation will be read by city officials.
Portage has been celebrating freedom from addiction for over forty years since its first substance abuse rehabilitation centre was opened in Prévost, Québec in 1973. Since then, Portage's Canadian addiction rehabilitation program has expanded into Ontario, Atlantic Canada, and British Columbia, and now offers specialised therapeutic treatment programs for adolescents, adults, mothers with young children, people with mental illness, and aboriginal communities. Portage has developed and/or operated addiction programs in some fifteen other countries.
Portage representatives will be attending Recovery Day rallies in Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto, and Fredericton, lending their voice to the call to end the stigma around addiction. The initiative seeks to encourage recovered addicts to speak proudly about the transformation they have made in their lives, while highlighting the importance of addiction rehabilitation treatment and inspiring people to seek the help they need to take back control of their lives.
"Graduates of our programs have gone on to succeed in business, healthcare, and the arts," states Peter Howlett, President of Portage. "By helping them to develop their self-confidence and empowering them with tools and competencies to be able to withstand the challenges of everyday life without resorting to drugs, rehabilitation treatment has helped these people to once again become happy and productive members of society."
Though no official Recovery Day event had been organised in Québec this year, Portage is hosting a Homecoming event for graduates of its centres in the Montréal region today to mark the day. Graduates and staff members from over the years will have the opportunity to share stories and network with other past graduates. Portage would like to thank IGA Prévost for sponsoring the event.
