Pop-up farmers' markets coming to your local Co-op

A variety of local producers – and, some of Calgary's favourite food trucks

CALGARY, Aug. 18, 2014 /CNW/ - Calgary Co-operative Association ("Co-op") prides itself on being built around community – not just in it. As a long-standing supporter of local farmers, ranchers and producers, the organization is proud to launch a series of pop-up farmers' markets at Co-op food stores.

"We want to demonstrate our commitment to local producers. The best way we can do that is to continue to promote local food – these events will do exactly that," says Ken Woo, Chief Executive Office at Calgary Co-op.

During Alberta's plentiful harvest season, Co-op shoppers can look forward to three one-day pop-up farmers market events. Each market will be home to 12-16 local food producers and some of Calgary's favourite food trucks.

1. Crowfoot Co-op:  Thursday, August 21 (3-7 pm)
2. Oakridge Co-op:  Thursday, September 4 (3-7 pm)
3. Richmond Road Co-op:  Thursday, September 18 (3 - 7 pm)

"Local producers often have a selection of products that customers otherwise wouldn't see in traditional grocery stores, which is why markets are a place of discovery," continued Woo, "Real food innovation is happening on the farms and ranches themselves – talking to the producers directly offers a consumer so much insight."

Co-op will continue to look for innovative ways of bringing new products to their customers. When one shops at their local Co-op they can be satisfied knowing that every purchase made goes back into community, to support our local farmers and ranchers and to help our neighbors and friends.
