OTTAWA, Dec. 13, 2018 /CNW/ - The Conference Board of Canada announces the appointment of Pedro Antunes as its new Chief Economist, succeeding Craig Alexander who left in the spring of 2018.
"I am delighted to name Pedro as our next Chief Economist," said Dr. Susan Black, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Conference Board of Canada. "Pedro is a well-respected economist recognized for his trusted ability to develop forecasts and interpret trends and turning points that are meaningful and actionable for Canadian leaders."
As Chief Economist, Pedro will represent the Conference Board on economic issues and ensure it is at the forefront of economic thinking. More than 40 economists produce a wide range of analyses on the U.S., Canadian, provincial, metropolitan and world economies—from 'quick takes' on the latest economic news to in-depth 25-year forecasts.
"The Conference Board has strong history of providing solid economic forecasting, modelling and analysis and I am fortunate to have been a part of this process," said Pedro Antunes. "I look forward to lending my expertise and experience to deliver sound economic analysis on key issues that will help move this country forward in a time of volatility and uncertainty."
Pedro joined The Conference Board of Canada as an economist in 1991 after working with the Canadian Forecasting Group at the Bank of Canada. In that time, Pedro has helped Canadian leaders navigate numerous national and regional business cycles and plan for the challenges an aging workforce, rising health care costs and Canada's lagging productivity. Pedro has produced ongoing research about Canadian labour markets, our national and regional fiscal challenges, immigration and a wide range of economic impact analysis—including the economic impacts of major disasters, the 2015 collapse in oil prices and recent tariff wars.
Pedro has also worked on several international development projects, helping decision-makers in Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan and Ukraine develop appropriate forecasting and policy analysis tools.
