Ontario youth recognised for success overcoming addiction

ELORA, ON, Nov. 19, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Thirty-five youth from across Ontario returned to Portage Elora on Sunday to kick off National Addictions Awareness Week (November 18 to 24) and to celebrate their success since completing a substance abuse rehabilitation program at Portage.

The event brought alumni, parents, and loved ones together with current residents and Portage staff members. Youth and parents shared personal stories in the hope they would inspire others on their journey of recovery.

Dan, a graduate from Ottawa, said: "I hope my story will help others overcome their fears and know they aren't alone no matter what the situation. It took me a while to open up but everyone was so patient and listened, even when I didn't speak. Portage helped me understand who I was and that paved the way to heal the deep wounds I had."

Julie, a mother from Oakville, said: "I grew up with my own addiction issues. When my son Zac went downhill so drastically I realised I didn't have the skills to guide him. I'm so grateful he got to Portage. Portage healed his soul and gave him a purpose in life. As I watched him grow and change I knew that if Zac was going to heal I had to heal too.  I made a choice to quit smoking and to get healthy myself."
