A $5 donation becomes $10 through Blanket the Country supporting 33 local charities
BURNABY, BC, Oct. 1, 2026 /CNW/ -- In cities across Canada, people are facing difficult circumstances and turning to local charities for support -- from shelter and safety to food security, counselling services, crisis support and more. These organizations help people navigate challenging and often isolating moments, and community support helps make it possible for them to continue providing the care their neighbours need.
This October 1-31, Canadians have an opportunity to support those in their own communities: A $5 donation to a local participating charity through Blanket the Country will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Canadian retailer Urban Barn, turning $5 into $10 of support for neighbours who need it most -- keeping the help close to home.
What can $10 do? For someone making a donation, $5 may feel like a small amount. But when it's matched, that contribution goes twice as far -- doubling the impact. $10 means Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids preparing and delivering two nutritious children's lunches. $10 means SOFIA House in Regina helping provide everyday essentials and resources for women and children as they rebuild their lives in a safe environment. $10 means Winnipeg's Willow Place providing personal hygiene products for a shelter participant, supporting healthy snacks for a family for a day or covering the cost of public transit for three youths. $10 means helping HopeSpring in Kitchener, Ont. reach 10 family physicians and their offices, connecting more people to free cancer support. $10 means The Women's Centre of Halton in Oakville, Ont. providing four minutes of free Court Support services. $10 means Cortellucci Hospice Vaughan (Ont.) helping provide compassionate, dignified hospice and palliative care to individuals and families in the community. $10 means supporting the efforts of Quebec's Véro & Louis Foundation in creating permanent homes designed for autistic adults -- with donations supporting charities in additional local communities across the country including British Columbia (Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Kamloops, Kelowna, Langley, Nanaimo, Port Coquitlam, Surrey, Vancouver, Victoria); Alberta (Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Red Deer); Saskatchewan (Saskatoon); Ontario (Barrie, Cambridge, Hamilton, Kingston, London, Mississauga, Newmarket, Oshawa, Ottawa, Richmond Hill, St. Catharines, Stittsville, Stoney Creek, Sudbury, Toronto, Waterloo, Whitby, Windsor); Quebec (Boisbriand, Boucherville, Brossard, Laval, Montreal, Quebec City); New Brunswick (Moncton) and Nova Scotia (Dartmouth).
How Canadians Can Help: From October 1-31, 2026, Canadians can make a suggested $5 donation at their local Urban Barn or online at urbanbarn.com. Urban Barn will match contributions dollar-for-dollar.
The simple idea is at the heart of Blanket the Country, Urban Barn's annual charitable giving campaign supporting 33 local charities across Canada -- helping people get the assistance they need, whether that means a warm meal, a safe space or a helping hand when it's needed most. By keeping donations within the communities where they're made, the campaign gives people a way to support smaller, community-focused, local charities doing important work close to home -- charities that may not always receive the same level of support or recognition as larger charities. And with Urban Barn matching donations, a small act of generosity can have twice the impact while helping shine a light on the vital work happening in communities across the country.
"Blanket the Country is about making it easy for Canadians to help where help is needed most -- right in their own communities, right here at home," says Linda Letts, President of Urban Barn. "It's neighbours helping neighbours, and we're proud to help make that connection possible by matching customer donations so their generosity can go twice as far."
