CALGARY, AB, Sept. 11, 2026 /CNW/ -- This week, the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, wrapped up a successful outreach to Calgary and communities across southern Alberta.
To begin his outreach, Minister MacDonald announced an investment of nearly $900,000 for SmartGRO Bioengineering Inc. under the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program – Research and Innovation Stream. In partnership with Hydragreens vertical farm, this funding enables SmartGRO to test and scale new clean lighting technology that helps indoor agriculture producers grow more while using less electricity. In addition to the $750 million investment dedicated to controlled environment agriculture, through the National Food Security Strategy, innovations like these boost the sector by lowering costs and helping local producers grow more of our food year-round, closer to home.
While in Bow Island, Minister MacDonald visited a multi-generational farm to discuss pulse and sugar beet operations.
In Barnwell, he saw the production of renowned Taber sweet corn and the innovative practices contributing to the long-term success and sustainability of the farm. He received first-hand insight into the opportunities and challenges producers face and explored ways to work together and build on their success.
Lethbridge engagement consisted of a diverse range of key agriculture and food processing sites in the area, including a pea protein processor, canola oilseed crusher and refiner, and grain milling operation. He engaged in discussions about the vital contributions of Alberta's processing sectors and opportunities for industry and government to strengthen competitiveness and resilience through continued collaboration.
In addition to visiting a processing plant in Nanton specializing in frozen food products, Minister MacDonald engaged with a large cattle-feeding operation in Wheatland County that has been in business for over 50 years.
Minister MacDonald also delivered remarks at Canadian Produce Marketing Association's (CPMA) semi-annual meeting. The Minister spoke about actions the government is taking to support Canada's fruit and vegetable industry while ensuring Canadians have reliable access to affordable, locally-grown produce on grocery shelves.
To conclude his outreach, Minister MacDonald toured the Crossroads Market, which has been operating since 1987, is one the city's longest-running year-round public markets, and features more than 150 vendors offering produce, meats, baked goods, and more.
