OTTAWA, June 4, 2019 /CNW/ - Due to improved navigational safety conditions and following consultations with local authorities and law enforcement, Minister Garneau has removed all remaining navigation restrictions that were implemented in flooded areas. The Ottawa River is now completely open to navigation.
Navigation is therefore no longer prohibited in the part of the Ottawa River between the western point of Île Dubé in the Parc National De Plaisance and the Grenville lighthouse, near communities such as Wendover, Plaisance, Papineauville, L'Orignal and Calumet.
Navigation warnings are still in place in some areas, such as the speed restriction of 9 knots for upriver traffic and 11 knots for downriver traffic that were in place between Ile des Barques and Batiscan, Quebec. Please refer to the Canadian Coast Guard's Navigational Warnings (NAVWARNs) website for a full list (http://nis.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/public/rest/messages/en/search).
Although water levels are returning to normal, the public must remain cautious and respectful while navigating, especially close to shore. We remind waterway users that they must continue to comply, where applicable, with subsection 2(7) of the Vessel Operating Restriction Regulations, which requires power-driven vessel operators not to exceed a speed of 10 km/h within 30 metres of the shore.
We thank the public who complied with the navigation restriction during the flooding period, along with the first responders, the Canadian military and many volunteers who worked tirelessly to protect houses, infrastructure and the environment.
"The exceptional situation we have just experienced has been difficult. The safety of Canadians remains our government's priority and I wish to thank everyone who has helped parents, friends and neighbors."
The Honourable Marc Garneau
Minister of Transport
