Media Advisory - Steelworkers and Supporters Across Ontario Come to Hamilton for 'Stand Up for Steel' Rally

HAMILTON, ON, Jan. 29, 2016 /CNW/ - Canada's steel industry, which supports 120,000 direct and indirect jobs, is in crisis.

The steel crisis is caused by unfair trade policies and massive, illegal dumping of subsidized foreign steel into our country. As the crisis worsens, Canadian steelmakers have cut production, idled plants and laid off workers, while thousands of pensioners have lost their benefits.

Everyone, it seems, except for our governments, recognizes decisive action is needed to ensure this key domestic industry remains a vital component of the advanced manufacturing economy our country needs.

On Saturday, January 30, steelworkers, pensioners, community activists, political leaders and supporters from across Ontario will rally in Hamilton to bring attention to the steel crisis.

"Ontario families need good jobs, our seniors need protection of their pensions and our communities need a reliable tax base. Join us on Saturday in Hamilton to stand up for our steel industry," said Marty Warren, United Steelworkers Ontario Director.

The rally will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton City Hall, 71 Main Street West.
