Media Advisory - Lighting the Night for Safety in At Risk Neighbourhoods
TORONTO, July 6, 2012 /CNW/ - Residents in the Islington & Satterly neighbourhood are working with Toronto Hydro-Electric System ("Toronto Hydro"), City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program (CCRP), Toronto Community Housing and Toronto Police Services to brighten the community by installing energy efficient light bulbs. The group has teamed up to "Light the Night" and help make neighbourhoods safer one compact fluorescent light bulb at a time.
WHO: | Toronto Hydro, City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Police Services 31 Division and local volunteers, including youth and residents.
WHAT: | Toronto Hydro representatives and local volunteers will be canvassing the neighbourhood of Islington & Satterly to install approximately 100 compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and clean up the community.
WHEN: | Saturday, July 7, 2012
10 a.m. - 1 p.m. | ||
WHERE: | 9 San Pietro Way, Islington Ave. & Satterly Road (South of Steeles Ave. W)
WHY: | The objective of the Light the Night program is to brighten vulnerable neighbourhoods and help make them safer, by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and encouraging residents to leave them on overnight. A CFL bulb left on between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. costs about a penny a day because they use 75 per cent less electricity* than standard incandescent bulbs.
Light the Night events are a community based response to safety concerns. This community outreach program aligns safety with energy efficiency by focusing on how valuable lighting can be to our communities.
