IQALUIT, NU, July 31, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, and Minister for the Arctic Council today announced an investment to support the Northern tourism sector. This investment will not only focus on marketing the North as a premiere travel destination, but will also support capacity building in the sector.
Today's announcement will help the Pan North Consortium, consisting of Nunavut Tourism, NWT Tourism, and Tourism Yukon, to market the North in key Canadian urban centers and media. It will also support market ready products for tourism operators.
In addition, Nunavut Tourism is implementing a series of activities in support of Tunngasaiji, Nunavut's tourism strategy. This investment will allow the organization to undertake surveys to better understand the needs of visitors and operators in Nunavut. In turn, this information will be used to provide capacity building training for tourism operators and front line staff in communities. The funding will also be used to showcase Nunavut at trade shows and other promotional opportunities.
- CanNor's investment in the Pan North Consortium tourism marketing is $840,000 over two years, with the Consortium contributing an additional $180,000. The total investment is $1,020,000.
- CanNor's investment in Nunavut Tourism's sector development is $1,831,603 over two years, with Employment and Social Development Canada contributing $25,000. Nunavut Tourism is contributing $375,000, with the Government of Nunavut an additional $262,500. The total investment is $2,494,103.
- Since its creation CanNor has invested $19.7 million tourism-related projects across the North under its Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) contribution program.
"Our Government is pleased to invest in tourism promotion and development as it directly supports economic activity and jobs in communities across the North. By promoting the beauty and adventure that lies in the North we are offering a fantastic opportunity for Canadians and international visitors to get to know a unique part of Canada."
