Groundbreaking for the Mon Shack, mes choix, mon avenir housing project in Sherbrooke
SHERBROOKE, QC, Dec. 19, 2017 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Quebec today marked the groundbreaking for the Mon Shack, mes choix, mon avenir community housing project in Sherbrooke. Once built, the two-storey structure will provide 18 transitional housing units for people with mental health issues.
The work should be completed in the summer of 2018. This housing project of more than $2.6 million is being developed by the organization Mon Shack, mes choix, mon avenir. This is the first community housing project in the Estrie region that will offer bilingual services to its clients. In addition to providing affordable housing units, the building will have space on the ground floor for a community room and the organization's offices.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie and Member of Parliament for Compton–Stanstead, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation; Guy Hardy, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries, Energy and Natural Resources and Member of the National Assembly for Saint-François, on behalf of Lise Thériault, Minister responsible for Consumer Protection and for Housing; and Steve Lussier, Mayor of Sherbrooke.

Highlights
- Through the SEED Funding program at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the AccèsLogis Québec program offered by the Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ), the governments of Canada and Quebec will be providing close to $1.1 million for the construction of the building.
- The City of Sherbrooke is providing more than $365,000 for the development of this project.
- Nearly $310,000 in additional financial assistance over five years, assumed by the SHQ (90%) and the City of Sherbrooke (10%), will enable the tenants to benefit from the Rent Supplement program, ensuring that they will not pay more than 25% of their income on housing.
- An amount of over $30,000 is being granted by Transition énergétique Québec to ensure that the building will meet Novoclimat certification standards.
