Greenland and Nunavut Ports Sign Cooperation Agreement: The Port of Nuuk and Nunavut port projects to cooperate on Arctic maritime resilience and economic opportunity

CAMBRIDGE BAY, NU, Aug. 31, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Port of Nuuk and the proponents of Nunavut deepwater port projects have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation between maritime infrastructure assets in Greenland and Nunavut.

The agreement brings together Sikuki Nuuk Harbour A/S, owner and operator of the Port of Nuuk; Qikiqtaaluk AEDC, proponent of the Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port Project; and West Kitikmeot Resources Corp., proponent of the Grays Bay Road and Port Project.

The MOU is being announced in the context of a trade mission to Nuuk this week by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.  which represents the Inuit of Nunavut.  The mission is focused on identifying opportunities for deeper economic and strategic partnership between Nunavut and Greenland.

The three parties will share Arctic port expertise and explore practical cooperation in maritime resilience, emergency response, vessel support, supply chains, infrastructure and environmental protection.

The agreement connects Greenland's major existing commercial port with two priority port developments in Nunavut, creating a framework for a stronger and more resilient Arctic maritime network.

The cooperation builds on the longstanding relationship between Greenland and Nunavut, grounded in shared Inuit culture, language, history and community ties. It also reflects broader economic ties between Canada and the Kingdom of Denmark on Arctic security and economic opportunity, including the growing importance of the Northwest Passage and the waters connecting Nunavut and Greenland.

Initial work will focus on practical port cooperation, coordinated emergency-response and vessel-support capabilities, and sharing knowledge on Arctic port development and operations.

Sikuki Nuuk Harbour A/S owns and operates the Port of Nuuk, Greenland.

Qikiqtaaluk AEDC is the proponent and developer of the Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port Project in Nunavut.

West Kitikmeot Resources Corp. is the proponent and developer of the Grays Bay Road and Port Project in Nunavut.
