VANCOUVER, Oct. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - Seniors and caregivers will have more input on how community elder care services are designed and delivered across Canada, announced the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State for Seniors.
"Our government is committed to working with local organizations to develop solutions that meet the needs of communities and achieve better results for all Canadians," said Minister of State Wong. "We are proud to partner with organizations such as the British Columbia Co-operative Association to address complex social issues in communities across the country."
The British Columbia Co-operative Association received $498,000 in federal government funding from the Social Development Partnerships Program (SDPP) for its elder care project. Seniors and caregivers will have the flexibility to shape their own services through the national network's collaborative model.
"The BC Co-operative Association and our associates across the country are honoured to partner with the Government of Canada for our Caring Co-operatively elder care project," said Carol Murray, Executive Director of the BC Co-operative Association. "The contribution from the Government of Canada allows us to reach out to communities across Canada and work with them to build co-operatives that empower elders and provide the support they need. We're pleased to receive the support of the Government of Canada for this important project."
Through the Social Development Partnerships Program (SDPP), funding is provided to eligible not-for-profit organizations for projects that help to improve the lives of children and families.
Economic Action Plan 2013 reinforces the need to bring partners together to find innovative approaches to local challenges, such as building partnerships across sectors and leveraging new ideas and sources of funding.

Social Development Partnerships Program
The Social Development Partnerships Program (SDPP) invests in organizations that support the well-being of Canadians--from developing a better understanding of the issues Canadians face, to providing greater access to information, programs and services.
The SDPP supports community programs through grant and contribution funding that directly assists non-government organizations to develop and implement innovative solutions to overcome barriers. For example, organizations carry out projects to help families taking care of elderly parents while raising children; to help youth who are at risk of dropping out of high school, and to increase participation, opportunities and accessibility for people with disabilities.
