GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 10, 2026 /CNW/ -- Canada is stronger when everyone has the chance to contribute and thrive. Persons with disabilities are more likely to face barriers to financial and economic security than Canadians without disabilities. The Government of Canada is focused on reducing barriers to accessing support so that persons with disabilities have greater opportunities to participate fully in their communities and the economy.
That's why, today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, announced that the government will provide a new supplemental payment for Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) recipients.
Beginning on September 17th, 2026, CDB recipients will receive a one-time supplemental payment of $150. This new payment is intended to help eligible applicants offset the cost associated with obtaining the disability tax credit (DTC), which is required to qualify for the CDB.
As announced in Budget 2025, recipients will be eligible for a supplemental payment of $150 for each approved DTC certificate that qualifies them for the CDB. This includes people who received their payments all at once for a full payment period, as well as those who have received the benefit in the past. For example, someone who received only one payment and is no longer eligible for the CDB would still be eligible for this supplemental payment.
Individuals will not need to apply for the supplemental payment. The payment will be issued automatically to those who qualify in the following phases:
September 17, 2026: Eligible and entitled CDB recipients who received a CDB payment during the months of July 2025 to June 2026 will receive a supplemental payment.
Winter 2027: Individuals who became eligible for a CDB payment at any time since July 2026 and individuals who were approved for a new DTC certificate (i.e. re-certified for the DTC) will receive a supplemental payment.
The implementation of this new payment reflects the federal government's ongoing commitment to improving financial security for Canadians with disabilities.

Quick facts
- Since issuing the first payments in July 2025, the Canada Disability Benefit has provided direct financial support monthly to hundreds of thousands of low-income persons with disabilities. To date, 335,650 people have received Canada Disability Benefit payments totalling $813,074,098.
- Amendments to the Canada Disability Benefit Regulations were published in the Canada Gazette Part II, on July 1, 2026, successfully completing the regulatory process to issue the supplemental payment. These amendments came into force on September 1, 2026.
