BURLINGTON, ON, March 23, 2017 /CNW/ - For this year's Earth Hour (Saturday, March 25), Bullfrog Power, Canada's leading green energy provider, and Mapleview Shopping Centre are teaming up to provide enough renewable energy to bullfrogpower every home in Burlington for one hour. Through the agreement, Mapleview will purchase 70,000 kWh of green electricity from Bullfrog Power—equivalent to what 68,775 homes in Burlington would use in one hour.1 Mapleview is one of seven Ivanhoé Cambridge shopping centres participating in Earth Hour events with Bullfrog Power. Together, they are bullfrogpowering the equivalent of more than 1.9 million households across Canada during Earth Hour.
Mapleview also bullfrogpowers the shopping centre's common areas with green electricity. That means that Bullfrog Power's generators put clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power used by Mapleview's common areas. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power's green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.
During Earth Hour Mapleview will turn all exterior lighting off, excluding an area where two restaurants are open, as well as the Exterior Digital Pylon sign. Inside the shopping centre, all lighting—except for emergency lighting—will be turned off for Earth Hour.
"By participating in Earth Hour, Mapleview Shopping Centre is demonstrating to its community that action on climate change is important and that supporting renewable energy in Canada is a meaningful way for individuals and businesses across the country to reduce their environmental impact," said Anthony Santilli, VP Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power.
Earth Hour is WWF's global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action.
"Earth Hour is meant to spark meaningful changes to tackle climate change, including in our own homes," says David Miller, president and CEO, WWF-Canada. "It's an opportunity to focus on solutions and making the transition to renewable energy is something we must and can do."
