Construction begins for a new affordable housing project in Regina

REGINA, May 17, 2018 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with the City of Regina and Silver Sage Holdings Ltd., officially announced funding for the construction of a six-unit rental housing project, including support services, for hard-to-house families.

The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Warren Steinley, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Regina Walsh Acres, on behalf of the Honourable Paul Merriman, Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), His Worship Michael Fougere, Mayor of the City of Regina, and Edmund Bellegarde, Silver Sage Board Chair, made the announcement today.

Quick Facts:

• This project will provide permanent housing for hard-to-house families. The homes will be located on two lots in close proximity, 1346 Forget Street and 5029 7^th Avenue. The project consists of the construction of six three-bedroom duplexes, each averaging 1,198 ft²
• The federal and provincial governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing $900,100 towards the six units under the Canada-Saskatchewan 2016-2018 Social Infrastructure Fund Allocation Increase.
• An additional $150,000 in funding will be provided by the City of Regina.
• Silver Sage Holdings Ltd. will contribute approximately $1 million in the form of cash/land equity and mortgage financing.
• This investment supports the Saskatchewan Housing Strategy and Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have affordable, safe, secure and stable housing, including those who are hard to house.
• It also supports the Province's Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan goal to increase community capacity to support people living with persistent and complex mental health and addictions issues, including housing and intensive team based supports.
