Canada announces West Kelowna as new Local Partner committed to using the Housing Design Catalogue
FrançaisWEST KELOWNA, BC, July 15, 2026 /CNW/ - Far too many Canadians are struggling to find homes they can afford. Solving Canada's housing crisis requires immediate action to bring down costs, cut red tape, and build homes more quickly. The Government of Canada is stepping up with a bold new approach to build affordable housing across the country. We are focused on building great neighbourhoods that Canadians want to, and can afford to live in.
The Housing Design Catalogue is part of a broader set of measures introduced by the federal government to double the rate of housing construction, restore affordability, and reduce homelessness. The Catalogue supports standardization in the housing sector, and local governments are key partners in unlocking that potential, through a library of over 50 pre-approved low-rise housing plans to accelerate gentle density nationwide, that's free to use for all Canadians. The designs take into consideration the different building requirements across Canada and were developed by regional architecture and engineering teams.
Today, the Honourable Stephen Fuhr, Secretary of State, Defence Procurement, and Member of Parliament for Kelowna, alongside the Mayor of West Kelowna, Gord Milsom, announced that West Kelowna has endorsed the Housing Design Catalogue and become the latest municipality to join dozens more across the country as an official Local Partner. West Kelowna is proactively supporting the Catalogue by pre-reviewing designs to support streamlined approvals--making it easier for builders and homeowners to plan their projects. Through the creation of development guidelines and updating policies and zoning, the City will increase the range of market housing options available to residents.
This builds on work completed as part of West Kelowna's Housing Accelerator Fund initiatives to support building priority housing and utilizing incentive programs, such as the Grow a Suite Grant Program, to decrease financial barriers for the development of non-market affordable, infill and missing middle housing types across the City.
Work continues with local governments across Canada to encourage them to support the Housing Design Catalogue.
The Government of Canada is making the housing investments that will help strengthen Canadian supply chains and create good jobs at every step of the homebuilding process – helping to build more homes and a stronger Canadian economy at the same time.
Quotes:
"Today is an example of how we are building a stronger Canada. By partnering with municipalities like the City of West Kelowna to support standardized housing designs and streamline approvals, we're making it faster and easier to build homes for Canadians. Together, we're expanding housing choices and building stronger, more resilient communities." – The Honourable Stephen Fuhr, Secretary of State, Defence Procurement and Member of Parliament for Kelowna on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development
"West Kelowna has been taking strong steps to increase housing in our community. It is city council's priority to provide residents and builders with opportunities and incentives that streamline the building permit process and create diverse housing options for West Kelowna. Thanks to the Housing Accelerator Fund, we have introduced several programs to help increase supply, including becoming a CMHC Housing Design Catalogue Local Partner. Through this partnership and the adoption of five CMHC designs, plus other strategies such as the Grow a Suite Grant Program, we are creating incentives that reduce costs and further fast-track housing from concept to construction and we encourage homeowners, developers and builders to tap into these new opportunities" – Gord Milsom, Mayor of West Kelowna
