SKIDEGATE, BC, Aug. 17, 2017 /CNW/ - On Saturday, August 19, Skidegate Band Council on Haida Gwaii will be celebrating the launch of the Haida Heritage Centre solar project in Skidegate, B.C. Bullfrog Power, Canada's leading green energy provider, contributed funding to the project through its community renewable projects program. The launch celebration, coinciding with the Haida Heritage Centre's ninth anniversary, will include a Haida clan parade, Haida dance performances, men's and women's competition dances, and a salmon barbeque.
"As we celebrate the Haida Heritage Centre's ninth year, we feel it is important to look to the future of our community and our children," said Billy Yovanovich, Chief Skidegate Band Councillor. "This new solar project will leave a cleaner footprint on Haida Gwaii for years to come and serve as a reminder that there are local solutions we can act on today to move toward a clean energy future."
The 100 kW solar project will incorporate a "solart" installation that will house a battery backup to power the facility when there is not enough light for the panels to generate power. As a result, the Haida Heritage Centre will rely less on diesel for its electricity.
"Bullfrog Power is proud to be a part of this project because it is a visible example in the community that renewable energy solutions are here today," said Ron Seftel, CEO, Bullfrog Power. "We are only able to support important projects like this one because of the homes and businesses all across Canada who choose renewable energy with Bullfrog Power."
The announcement comes on the heels of Bullfrog Power's partnership with the Swiilawiid Sustainability Society to install solar projects at three Haida Gwaii youth camps. Through its community renewable projects program, Bullfrog Power has supported more than 115 green energy projects nationwide. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power's community projects include the Hope Blooms solar greenhouse in Halifax, a solar project with the Lutsel K'e Dene First Nation in the Northwest Territories and Canada's first community solar project in Nelson, BC.
