Albertans reject no-fault insurance
Survey by Nanos Research for FAIR Alberta indicates people want choice and trust courts more than insurance companies to settle outcomes for automobile accidents
OTTAWA, June 9, 2020 /CNW/ - A new provincial survey conducted by Nanos Research, for FAIR Alberta explored the perceptions of Albertans on both "at-fault" and "no-fault" automobile insurance. Asked their preference regarding automobile insurance and who they trust to make decisions about compensation and recovery in case of automobile accidents, the research found that three times as many Albertans prefer an "at-fault" automobile insurance system. Albertans are seven times more likely to trust the courts to determine fair compensation for an automobile accident compared to insurance companies. Albertans also would want to have the medical provider of their choice to help in their recovery from an accident rather than having either insurance companies or the government appoint a medical provider.
"Albertans need affordable auto insurance, accountability for drivers and insurance companies, and consumer protections to ensure the system is fair," says Keith McLaughlin, spokesperson for FAIR Alberta. "No-fault is none of that and this research shows very clearly that Alberta consumers don't want a no-fault model that would eliminate their right to access the court system and challenge decisions made by insurance companies."

"They trust the courts to make fair decisions and value their ability to choose medical providers as opposed to having insurance companies or the government appointing a medical provider."
Key survey findings:
A majority (61%) prefer an at-fault automobile insurance system over a "no-fault" system
A majority (69%) trust a judge or the courts most to determine what is fair compensation for a victim seriously injured by an impaired driver
Seven in ten say they would want a medical provider of their choice to make decisions about their recovery and compensation if they were injured in a collision
Methodology: The results are part of an online representative survey of 501 Alberta residents, 18 years of age or older, between June 1st and 4th, 2020.
