The excellent news spread like wildfire in the region. At dawn on September 6, while drinking her coffee, one of the members discovered that her lottery group had won the Lotto Max jackpot. Through calls and word of mouth, the other winners were quickly tracked down: the notebook in which store employees usually write down the names of group players was very useful! Soon, everyone gathered at the general store for an impromptu party filled with cries of joy and emotions.
A jubilant community Winners, their families and curious onlookers gathered at Salmon Bay Farm in Rivière-Saint-Paul on September 18 to celebrate the prize award. Faithful to its long-standing tradition of creating lottery groups, the retailer will receive a 1% commission of $500,000.
Inspiring stories
The day after the draw, Diana Griffin Blanche checked the Lotto Max results while drinking her coffee. "Check, but I think we won 50 million!" she told her friend and store employee, Malinda Griffin.
Seventy-year-old Loretta Cabot Griffin, who worked in fish processing, made a symbolic gesture when she learned she was now a millionaire: she took off her hairnet and announced that she was retiring on the spot!
Adam Jones Fowler, a road worker in Rivière-Saint-Paul, learned the great news through a video call. "I think you won't need to go back to work anymore," Griffin joked. He plans to cut down on his hours to have more time for his hobbies, such as hunting and fishing.
The lucky winners mentioned several plans, including building a cottage, purchasing a new truck and travelling as a family.
Over 120,000,000 $ won in Québec in recent weeks The end of the summer was particularly lucky for Québec lottery players: this $50,000,000 jackpot is the fifth major prize to be won here in recent weeks—and it's the biggest one! A $46,000,000 jackpot was also awarded to a Centre-du-Québec resident, and Montréal, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Côte-Nord residents each won one of three annuities of $1,000 a day for life with Grande Vie.
