Nurses list their top priorities for the coming budget
TORONTO, Jan. 28, 2015 /CNW/ - Representatives from the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) will be dispensing budgetary advice when they appear before an all-party finance committee Thursday, Jan. 29 at Queen's Park.
The Ontario government is expected to introduce a budget sometime this spring. The province's nurses want the committee to consider budget proposals they say will help keep Ontarians healthy and ensure nurses can continue to deliver quality health care. Among the recommendations being put forth are: an immediate increase in the minimum wage to $14 per hour as a key social determinant of health, a ban on medical tourism enshrined in legislation to protect the health system, and follow-through on the government's commitment to allow RNs to prescribe medication – a move RNAO says will improve timely access to health services.
